Modern adaptations of Jane Austen's novels

It seems as if Jane Austen had never left us. The characters she created in her novels, their everyday life and their stories of heartbreaks and happiness seem to be an appealing topic for all ages and all cultures. The fact that these stories also come with a set of social restrictions that can be translated into any environment has caused that director find them contemporary and relevant. Therefore a US high school in Clueless is the setting for a modern version of Emma; the two diametrically opposed sisters who, after their rich father’s death, go from Prada to nada reminds us of Sense and Sensibility and the inter-racial romance in Bride And Prejudice rings a bell on Pride and Prejudice.

CLUELESS

Cher, a high school student in Beverly Hills, must survive the ups and downs of adolescent life. Her external demeanour at first seems superficial, but rather it hides her wit, charm, and intelligence which help her to deal with relationships, friends, family, school, and the all-important teenage social life.

FROM PRADA TO NADA

A Latin spin on Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, where two spoiled sisters who have been left penniless after their father's sudden death are forced to move in with their estranged aunt in East Los Angeles.

BRIDE AND PREJUDICE

A Bollywood-style update of Jane Austen's classic tale, in which Mrs. Bakshi is eager to find suitable husbands for her four unmarried daughters. When the rich single gentlemen Balraj and Darcy come to visit, the Bakshis have high hopes, though circumstance and boorish opinions threaten to get in the way of romance.
