Persuasion

Anne is very much loved and appreciated by everyone.

Do you think these people’s love is sincere? Or, is there any concealed interest in it?

Think of the people who surround her and explain her relation towards her.

finally marries the rich son.

Does the story ring a bell? What does it remind you of?

Emma (1996)

Emma states that the mere thought of Mr Knightley returning Harriet´s affections makes her ill to the point of realising that she wants Mr Knightley just for herself. The idea of losing him torments her.

a) Can this be an unmistakable sign of true love? Discuss.

Mr Knightley is considered the most gentlemanlike of all Austen´s male characters.

b) What values and ideas does Mr Knightley stand for? hint: Consider the symbolism of his name.

Becoming Jane

The pressure of expectations

Both Jane and Tom Lefroy are affected by the pressure and limitations of society. In the case of Jane, her parents pressure her to marry and assure a good position in life whereas in the case of Mr Lefroy, his uncle, Judge Langlois, expects him to become a disciplined lawyer and obey his commands in order to receive his inheritance. In other words, they are expected to behave in a certain way.

Do you feel under anybody’s pressure? What do your parents expect you to do?
